UNDERSTANDING ANAPHYLAXIS RISK

Why Do Some Allergic Reactions Become Severe So Quickly?

Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that can affect multiple body systems at once. It may cause hives, swelling, trouble breathing, dizziness, vomiting, or low blood pressure, and it can progress quickly if not treated.

Identifying triggers and recognizing early warning signs is a key part of reducing risk and acting in time.

SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS

Have You Noticed Any of These Warning Signs?

You may benefit from an evaluation if you experience:

  • Hives or swelling that appears quickly
  • Throat tightness or trouble breathing
  • Repetitive coughing, wheezing, or a hoarse voice
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain with other symptoms
  • Dizziness, fainting, or sudden weakness
  • A history of a severe reaction to foods, insect stings, medications, or latex

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history, review of the previous reaction, and assessment of the suspected trigger. In some cases, the allergist may recommend additional testing or measurements such as serum tryptase to support diagnosis and evaluate related risk.

TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT

How Anaphylaxis Risk Is Managed

  • Trigger Evaluation: Helps identify foods, medications, insect stings, or materials linked to the reaction.
  • Epinephrine as First-Line Treatment: Epinephrine is the first treatment for anaphylaxis and should not be delayed.
  • Personalized Action Plan: We create a clear guide for recognizing symptoms and knowing what to do in an emergency.
  • Auto-Injector Education: We guide patients on when to use it, how to carry it, and how to respond if symptoms worsen.
  • Follow-Up and Prevention: We help reduce exposures, review safe alternatives, and strengthen long-term preparedness.

Management depends on the trigger, the severity of the reaction, and each patient’s clinical history. The goal is to reduce risk, improve preparedness, and help you respond more confidently if an emergency happens.
