INSECT ALLERGY

Less Fear of Stings. More Confidence Outdoors.

Reactions to insect stings can range from local swelling to more serious symptoms. With the right evaluation, it is possible to identify risk, better understand what is triggering the reaction, and help you feel safer in daily life and outdoor activities.

UNDERSTANDING INSECT ALLERGY

Why Do Some Stings Cause More Serious Reactions?

Most stings cause pain, redness, and local swelling. But in people with insect allergy, the immune system may react with more severe symptoms such as hives, widespread swelling, breathing problems, or even anaphylaxis.

Identifying the insect involved and recognizing early warning signs is key to reducing risk and responding quickly.

Benefits of Allergy Care:

of the trigger

Expected Results

SYMPTOMS & DIAGNOSIS

Have You Noticed Any of These Signs?

You may benefit from an evaluation if you experience:

  • Large swelling after a sting
  • Hives or itching in other areas of the body
  • Throat tightness or trouble breathing
  • Coughing, wheezing, or dizziness after a sting
  • A history of severe reactions to bee, wasp, hornet, or fire ant stings
  • Uncertainty about whether a past reaction was local or allergic

Diagnosis begins with a detailed medical history and review of the suspected insect and type of reaction. In some cases, the allergist may recommend skin testing or blood testing to confirm venom sensitization and guide treatment and prevention.

TREATMENT & MANAGEMENT

How Insect Allergy Is Treated

  • Trigger Insect Evaluation: Helps identify whether the reaction is linked to bee, wasp, hornet, yellow jacket, or fire ant.
  • Future Sting Action Plan: We create a clear guide for recognizing symptoms and knowing when to seek help or use epinephrine.
  • Epinephrine for Emergencies: If there is risk of anaphylaxis, epinephrine should be used right away for severe symptoms.
  • Venom Immunotherapy: In selected patients, allergy shots can significantly reduce the risk of future severe reactions.
  • Daily Prevention Steps: We guide patients on how to reduce exposure and stay safer during outdoor activities.

Treatment depends on the type of reaction, the insect involved, and each patient’s level of risk. The goal is to help you respond more safely, reduce the chance of future severe reactions, and feel more confident in daily life and outdoor settings.
